Houses There are lots of different types of houses, used by different people at different times in their lives We’re going to revise some vocabulary for furniture and description Think about your house – how would you describe it?

Types of houses Houses come in all shapes and sizes! They vary within cities and towns, as well as in the countryside Different countries also have different types of houses

Detached houses Detached houses are the most typical type of house in Britain “Detached” means that the house does not share walls with any other house They often have larger gardens Why do you think this type of house is so popular?

Semi-detached houses Semi-detached houses are houses which are built next to each other This means that they share walls These houses are very common in the outskirts of cities Their gardens are usually long and narrow

Terraced houses Terraced houses are houses which are built in a row They are very common in cities Older terraced houses often have a cellar or basement Their gardens are usually small

Flats Flats, or blocks of flats, are not really very common in Britain There are more blocks of flats in big cities, such as London and Birmingham, but in smaller cities like Worcester (which is the same size as Palencia), there are only two blocks of flats! Students and young couples tend to live in flats until they have enough money to rent a house

Bungalows Bungalows are a common sight in Britain They are houses of only one floor, so there are no stairs They are popular with old people – why is that?

Caravans Around one million British people go on holiday in a caravan. They attach it to their cars and drive to other parts of the country, or even abroad. Why do people choose a caravan over a hotel?

Rooms in a house Houses have lots of different rooms for different purposes Some rooms are very important, like the kitchen or the bathroom Some houses have extra rooms, such as a private bar or even a swimming pool!
