1) To explain how scientists classify living things 2) To identify the 6 kingdoms of life
9
Taxonomy The science of classification Based on common characteristics All living things are grouped into 3 Domains Under Domains there are 7 other levels
10
Levels of Classification Domain is the largest level Species is the smallest level The more levels that are the same, the more closely related 2 organisms are Together, Genus and species make up the scientific name Ex. Homo sapiens
13
Domains Archaea Bacteria Eukarya
15
Bacteria are grouped into 2 Domains Domain: Archaea Kingdom: Archaebacteria Unicellular Found in extreme environments Domain: Bacteria Kingdom: Eubacteria Unicellular Common
16
4 Kingdoms of Eukarya
17
Organisms are put in different kingdoms based on: Can they make their own food? Autotrophic vs. Heterotrophic What type of cells? How complex? Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Do they have a cell wall? How many cells? Unicellular (1) Multicellular (many)
18
Animalia Multicellular Heterotrophs – cannot make their own food
19
Plantae Multicellular Autotrophs – make their own food
20
Fungi Most are many cells Cannot make their own food Most are decomposers
21
Protists Left-overs Unicellular or Multicellular Things that are not fungi, bacteria, plants or animals
