8 Labeling Theory Ariel Castro came from what we would call a “normal” family. He had a mother and a father that raised him, until he died in As a child, he was a decent student and over all a good child. His criminal life began when he was arrested for assaulting his ex-wife, though he was never charges for it. Since then came the labeling. He was labeled by the society because he lashed out on his ex-wife. Leaving in the neighborhood that he did, his neighbors said that he was quiet but pleasant. After all, he drove the local school’s bus. He was trusted with the children of the area. Where I believe the labeling theory really comes into play is when Castro was being interrogated. He kept rejecting the label that the police forced on him. When authorities questioned him, he claimed “ Everything that we all did was consensual. They told me to do all this. I never forced it on them.” Later when he was asked again, He nicknamed himself “Monster.” Right then, he brought the label on himself.
