Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program PRP is a series of planned interventions to help persons who are in treatment for serious and persistent mental illness to: Improve patient’s quality of life Improve in their recovery, and to Return to optimum level of functioning at home, school, work and other areas

Examples of Needs Addressed in PRP Social (e.g. relating with others) Educational (e.g. doing well in school) Occupational (e.g. to do well in job search, job interview, job performance, commuting, punctuality, job keeping) Behavioral (e.g. anger management) Cognitive (e.g. memory, thinking)

Nature of PRP Supplementary care to medication and therapy Individualized and evidence-based care Focuses more on patient’s ability, not disability Focuses more on patient’s wellness, not symptoms Focuses more on patient’s strength, not weakness Client-centered care Fostered by client and counselor partnership Care mostly provided in client’s natural settings Central focus is recovery and functioning

Process of PRP Psych Rehab process includes: 1. Referral by patient’s clinician 2. Assessment of the client’s needs 3. Planning the rehabilitation care (IRP) 4. Implementing the plan of care 5. Evaluating the outcome of the care 6. Replanning (IRP Review)

Internal Factors that Facilitate PRP Strengthen the following factors in the client: Hope – help client recognize that recovery is possible Empowerment – help correct feeling of helplessness Connection- help identify own role and importance in the world Recognition – help client recognize/identify needed changes Insight – help develop insight into how to proceed to change Determination – help foster client’s determination to change

External Factors that Facilitate PRP Promote the following factors in the PRP program : 1. Support from family, friends and PRP team 2. Freedom from stigma 3. Freedom from discrimination (work, school, housing, treatment, benefits, entitlements, etc) 4. Service with respect, listening, empathy, and trust 5. Teamwork and collaboration among and between program staffs
