Leadership of Ralph Ralph: tries to create a society based on survival using a repetition of hope for rescue (fire to signal ships, shelters, drinking water) Ralph = Democracy (brings civilization to the island symbolized with the conch at assemblies) “They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority” (50).
