All living things are made of cells and all cells have DNA DNA is the “Blue print” or map to make a new cell. DNA-Deoxyribonucleic acid -Very long molecule, but really quite simple-
2
DNA looks like a twisted ladder (double helix) DNA is made of a sugar, a phosphate, and a base (these three things together are called a “nucleotide”) These are the 4 Bases Adenine-A Thymine-T Guanine-G Cytosine-C “A” goes with “T” and “G” goes with “C”
5
When the DNA molecule is folded back and looped up (packaged up like clothes in a suitcase) it is called a “Chromosome” Chromosomes are in the nucleus of Eukaryote (more complex) cells and look like little strings. Humans have 46 Chromosomes in all cells. Prokaryotes (simple cells like bacteria) have no nucleus or chromosomes, so the DNA is just spread around in the cell.
