2 Please move to your Fall partner Using the first page of the packet, Pick any two questions to answer with your partner.

3 Let’s review our answers 1. Why did the government give public land to the railroads? 2. Who were the vaqueros? 3. What was life like for the Plains tribes before white settlers arrived? 4 What were some of the ideas of the Populist Party?

4 Traveling by train….. How many of you have? How would you describe it to someone? What does is feel like, look like? What does it look like in the movies? What is the benefit of one say compared to horse and carriage? What does it mean to the West and to the American Indian?

7 Atlas work… let’s get ready! In the atlas, turn to page 64-65 Let’s read the overview ( stars are next to the overview items) Next, Picture B A – Miles of track C- Railroads cross the open range D- Ranching expands, buffalo herds shrink E – herds F- The open range is closed

8 Practice with the atlas pages Highlight the question, notice how many items it is asking you to answer. Let’s answer the following: Gathering Facts Places, Regions, Landscapes Links near and far

9 On your own … Using Indian lands to feed the nation. Practice on your own. Open to pages 66-67 in the atlas. Repeat what we just did together, but on your own. You have 20 minutes. When done, return the atlas, but keep the paper out.

10 Closure What can you tell about the importance of railroads and our nations growth from the atlas work you did today? Turn and talk to your elbow partner
