814 Charlemagne dies, empire splits into 3 Kingdoms. 800-900’s Invasions. Muslims from N. Africa, Magyars Invade France & Italy, Vikings invade from Scandinavia. Scandinavia relied on the sea for trade and food. Viking’s (raiding) Attacked villages and churches along the coast. Vikings explored the Atlantic, NA, & settled in parts of Europe.

Invasions brought suffering to Europe. By the 900’s Frankish Kingdom was a group of small territories called Germany. 936 – Duke Otto of Saxony elected King of Germany. 962 Pope names Otto, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Frederick I & II tried to unite Germany and Italy. The Pope resisted.

400’s AD Priest Patrick spread Christianity in Ireland. Pope Gregory I Spread Christianity. Gregory asked Monks to become Missionaries. 597 Gregory sends 40 Monks to Britain.

Monks / Nuns provided schools and hospitals. Monks copied the Roman and Greek works. Preserved Classical Knowledge. Monks lived in abbots, Nuns in convents.

Monasteries became wealthy, active in political affairs. King wanted the Pope to obey them, Pope wanted the King to obey the church. 1073 Gregory VII - declared only the Pope could Appoint Church Officials. Excommunicated Henry. King Henry IV angry. German Nobles select a new King. Henry seized Rome and named a new Pope. 1122 Concordat of Worms. Agreement –Pope / Ruler.
