Solar System Lesson 6 October 17th Mrs. Matelski-5th Grade
2
Sun Largest object in the solar system 4.5 billion years old
Outer layer is 11,000 degrees F Solar Systems only star
3
Mercury Closest to the sun which makes it very very hot
Smallest planet Rotates very slowly Has no moons
4
Venus Has no atmosphere Very similar to Earth Has no moons
Surface is very hot and dry
5
Earth Has one moon named Luna Only planet known to support life
Has more exposed water than land
6
Mars A lot like the earth
Scientist believe at one time this planet had rivers, streams, lakes and even an ocean. The only water on mars today is either frozen in the polar caps or underground.
7
Jupiter At least 63 moons Biggest of all the planets
Made of a big ball of gas Has 3 rings that are very hard to see
8
Saturn At least 34 moons 2nd biggest planet
There are multiple rings that can be seen with a small telescope. Rings are 169,800 miles wide, but very thin
9
Uranus Spins on its side ( unlike any other planet or moon) Has rings
Has 27 moons Coldest planet Can be seen with the unaided eye
10
Neptune Has six rings that circle the planet Discovered in 1846
