Tell us About Yourself Name Major If you had a super power, what would it be and why?

What is Mindset? “Mindsets are beliefs about yourself, your intelligence, talents, and personality.” Are these qualities “fixed” traits that you are born with or can you cultivate these throughout your life? - Carol Dweck

Mindset Includes… Your attitude towards school and learning. The choices you make about giving up or continuing on when you hit a roadblock. Knowledge of and desire to utilize resources. Finding pathways to move away from a fixed mindset, to a growth-oriented frame of mind.

Thinking About Mindset as a Spectrum Can you reflect on your own experiences to find examples of growth and fixed mindsets towards learning?

How is Mindset Related to Your Learning?

The Goal of a Growth-Oriented Mindset Moving toward becoming a well- rounded, knowledgeable individual. Not allowing pitfalls to prevent you from meeting your personal goals.

Let’s Reflect: What are the benefits of being in a growth-oriented mindset at Chaffey? Do you find it easy or difficult to be in this mindset? Are we ever in a 100% fixed mindset? NO!

What does our discussion reveal about your current mindset?

How To Improve Your Growth Mindset Learn to hear your fixed mindset voice. Talk back to it with your growth mindset voice. Practice positive self-talk about succeeding. Laugh at yourself. Recall past successes. Learn from stories about how other people have succeeded. Find role models to emulate. Cultivate friendships which encourage you to talk about goals. Think of difficulties as the wrong strategy, not a lack of talent. Think of setbacks as challenges, not failures. Educate yourself and learn how to learn. Reward yourself for small sub-goal attainments. Re-goal and re-prioritize. Rest adequately, eat well, and exercise. Recognize that you have a choice. Snyder (1996), qtd. in http://www.semo.edu/ustudies/images/StuTrans_Pattengale_HopeScale_2009.pdfhttp://www.semo.edu/ustudies/images/StuTrans_Pattengale_HopeScale_2009.pdf and Carol Dweck from http://mindsetonline.com/changeyourmindset/firststeps/index.htmlhttp://mindsetonline.com/changeyourmindset/firststeps/index.html

Mindset is not solely fixed or growth-oriented, but a continuum that we can actively change. Mindset is a choice. It may seem like you don’t have any options, but you always do. Change does not happen overnight. Review

One Last Go Around… Name one thing that stood out to you, and how you can use it to impact your success here at Chaffey?
