By the end of the class period… I can recognize reading is an active process in which I interact with the text to construct meaning beyond comprehension. I can use appropriate reading strategies in order to construct meaning before, during, and after reading. I can draw parallels between the lives of the two Wes Moores in order to begin evaluating their complex characters. I can identify and correct writing convention errors in a selected paragraph in order to improve the clarity of my writing.

Strategies for Active Reading It is important to prepare yourself to read so you can fully engage with the text. Look at the title and make some guesses about the content. Anticipate the author’s message and predict it as you read. Ask questions as you read (who, what, where, when, how). Associate what is being read with personal experiences and make connections to self, other texts, and world.

Characterization DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.
