INTRODUCTION Education a strong factor in a nation’s social and economic development The quality of human resource in a nation judged by the number of literate persons The literacy rate of Pakistan is 56% (2008)

BACKGRUOND Punjab comprises of 60 % of the total population of Pakistan The literacy rate of Punjab 45.56% (1998). Highest in Rawalpindi Huge gender gap. Girls only made 45% of the total primary school enrollments, Lack of basic facilities in 80,600 schools (1998) Lack of experienced and qualified teachers in schools 70.5% and lowest in Rajanpur 20.2%

VARIOUS STEPS FOR IMPLEMENTATION Political commitment World Bank support To increase enrollment PESRP provided free text books (7.25 million students) Provision of missing infrastructure to schools in Punjab (63,674 schools)

Stipend girls students of middle schools in 15 low literacy districts (target 175,000 girls per month) To ensure the availability of teachers (13000 new teachers on contract) Teachers training initiative was launched (90,000 teachers training cycle was completed)

Punjab Education Foundation was restructured (100 million allocated for this yearly)

CURRENT STATUS PERSP a great successful program and even after the change of the government its importance could not be denied. Punjab Education Assesment System launched in 2008 Increase in sector budget by 50%. Mass awareness campaigns organized to sentisize parents and general public. The present literacy rate of Punjab is 66% (2008)
