3 Dissident Day What: A dissident is someone whom speaks out against his or her government and or policy. A dissident is someone willing to speak out in an effort to bring about change (revolution). How: Effective dissidents use the media to get their message out to the world. Social media is a very effective tool today = cyber dissidents Dissidents are willing to sacrifice their own lives for the cause (Martyr)

4 Mohandas K. Gandhi Educated Indian who pushed for independence from the British. Gandhi pushed for nonviolent passive resistance and civil disobedience The Salt March and boycott of British goods helped bring change nonviolently

5 Mohandas K. Gandhi Was Gandhi a dissident? Who did he speak out against? Was he willing to give up his life or have his life altered for the cause?

He was imprisoned for 27 years as an attempt to hinder (slow down) his efforts. He became the 1 st democratically elected Black South African President and apartheid is officially over. He received the Nobel Peace Prize and recently passed away

8 Malala Yousafzai Malala spoke out against the Taliban whom denied women and girls the right to an education. She was shot in the face/head by the Taliban to send a fearful message to all those that were supporting her and her efforts. She has returned to her cause and has brought world attention to the issues in Pakistan. She was nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize

9 Aung San Suu Kyi Aung San Suu Kyi spoke out against the government of Burma (Myanmar) for their abuses against the people of Burma. She was under house arrest for many years in an attempt to keep her quiet. She is trying to run for the Presidential Office in 2015 She received the Nobel Peace Prize

10 Dalai Lama In 1949, when Mao took over China during the Chinese Communist Revolution he eliminated Tibet. Tibet was the home of many Chinese Buddhists. The Dalai Lama fled from Tibet or risk being killed by the Red Guards. He lives in exile in India, just across the border and speaks out against China and China’s policy. He demands the recognition of Tibet as a separate part of China. He received the Nobel Peace Prize

11 Ai Wei Wei Ai Wei Wei is a famous Chinese artist. He designed the Olympic stadium for China. He is an activist against the Chinese government and its censorship of the media in China. He has been beaten and arrested by the Chinese government. He is under constant surveillance by the government.

12 Joshua Wong Joshua Wong was one of the most prominent leaders of the Umbrella Protests in Hong Kong in 2014-2015. The Protests have drawn many youths and intellects to call for democratic reform in China, specifically Hong Kong. Mostly, the people want free elections.

13 Compare and Contrast What do all of these dissidents have in common? What is different? What is the response of totalitarian governments? What seems to be the best way to create change?
