2 1916 - Caroline Hunt Diet Five Food Groups meats & other protein- rich foods (2 to 3 servings + 1 cup milk) cereals & other starchy foods (9 servings) vegetables&fruits (5 servings a day) fatty foods (9 servings- one tablespoon each) sugars (10 servings - one tablespoon each)

Stiebeling Diet 12 food groups milk (2 cups a day) lean meat, poultry &fish (9 to 10 servings a week) beans, peas and nuts (1 a week) eggs (1 a day) flours and cereals (as desired) leafy green and yellow vegetables (11 to 12 a week) potatoes & sweet potatoes (1 a day) other vegetables & fruits (3 a day) citrus fruits & tomatoes (1 a day) butter(no specification) other fats(no specification) sugars(no specification)

4 1940s - Basic Seven Foundation Diet - Seven food groups green&yellow vegetables (1 or more servings) citrus fruits & tomatoes (1 or more servings) potatoes & other vegetables & fruits (2 or more servings) milk & milk products (2 or more servings) meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans & dried peas (1 to 2 servings) bread, flour and cereals (every day) butter & fortified margarine (some daily)

5 1956 - Basic Four Foundation Diet Four food groups milk & milk products (2 or more servings) meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dry beans * nuts (2 or more servings) fruits & vegetables (4 or more servings) breads & cereals (4 or more servings)

6 1979 - Hassle-Free Diet Added another group to the Basic Four: fats, sweets & alcohol (moderate use)

7 1980 - 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans The basis for the Food Guide Pyramid, which was first unveiled in 1992, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are revised every five years by the U.S.D.A.

8 Future Dietary Guidelines What will it be? No Fats, Some Fats Bad Fats, Good Fats No carbs, All carbs No proteins, All protein Who Knows Just wait and see

9 What to remember Calories in gives us the fuel to energize our day Calories out are the calories we burn each day It does not help us to eat more calories to become a slave to a nutrition guideline
