1 Katie’s Plan: I’m going to use 2 days since we will be testing later than I thought. Feel free to do as many or as little of these steps as you would like of course. 1.Hunger bell ringer (next slide) 2.Go over definitions students will need to know (you can just go over them, have students write them down, create Frayers, or whatever you choose) 3.Go over Hunger Facts (included in this PowerPoint) 4.Have kids brainstorm causes of hunger in Africa with a partner or in a small group (do this on Graphic Organizer) 5.Watch Hunger YouTube videos (I’ve included 3 to choose from at the end of this PowerPoint) & add notes/explanations to graphic organizers. Share some answers as a class after each video or just discuss as a whole group at the very end. Students can add to their graphic organizers as you see fit. In order to have several ideas, this is going to take some extra discussion. I’ve included a filled out graphic organizer for your convenience. 6.Get back in groups and try to come up with at least 3 solutions that would address hunger problems. Add these to graphic organizers. (You could also have them brainstorm individually and do a think/pair/share type thing.) 7.Share possible solutions as a class and write a class list of answers on the SmartBoard. 8.Students will write 1 paragraph about what they think is the single best solution for addressing hunger problems in Africa & why. (You could also have them write a longer essay talking about hunger problems, their causes, and possible solutions. You could also do a RAFT where students pretend they are starving & write a letter to the U.S. asking for help.
