2 Management Skills The skills required to be a successful manager are broken down into three categories Conceptual Skills Human Skills Technical Skills

3 Conceptual Skills The ability to think in the abstract or to see the “big picture” The ability to generate ideas & problem solve The ability to see how the organization fits together, how it fits into it’s industry, community etc. Especially important for Top Managers

4 Starbucks Example Conceptual Skill
Historically, Starbucks has had a reputation for only selling very expensive coffee. Top management realizes the economy is slowing down and people are spending less on coffee, they decide to offer $1.00 bottomless cups of coffee

5 Human Skills The ability to interact and work effectively with other people “Good People Skills” The ability to motivate, communicate with others, resolve conflicts, understand others feelings and needs etc. All managers require strong Human Skills

6 Starbucks Example Human Skills
Starbucks understands that happy employees are better employees and offers health benefits and free coffee. Store (First-Line) Managers are also encouraged to offer flexible schedules to their non-management employees

7 Technical Skills The skills necessary to accomplish a specific task
Knowing the methods, techniques and equipment to actually do a job Many managers get promoted to their first management job because they have excellent technical skills Technical Skills most important for First-Line Managers or Supervisors so they can manage their area and employees

8 Starbucks Example Technical Skills
Starbucks Store Managers must have the technical skills of making coffee , using cash register etc. in order to effectively manage Starbucks Accounting Department Manager must have a strong technical knowledge of accounting in order to effectively manage that department.
