Mars Through Time Welcome!!
3
Mars Through Time Objectives Demonstrate how evolving technology advances scientific understanding using the history of Mars exploration as an example. Model scientific processes using the history of Mars exploration as a framework. Facilitate group discussions of the nature and process of science. Model and discuss various instructional strategies. Provide data-rich inquiry activities appropriate for use in the high school classroom that demonstrate the nature and process of science and fundamental planetary science concepts. YOUR INPUT IS WELCOMED AND EXPECTED!!
4
Mars Through Time NGSS Alignment Activities are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. Alignment of activities is outlined in a document under Tab 1 of your binder.
5
Mars Through Time Resources Tab 2 of your binder.

Mars in 1965? Imagine you’re a teacher in the spring of 1965. The Mariner 4 spacecraft will be flying by Mars over the summer on July 14. The spacecraft will take the first ever close-up images of Mars. These images have the potential to confirm ideas of life on Mars or completely shatter ideas of Mars.

What do you tell your students about Mars? What do we know about Mars at this time (1965)?

History of Mars Exploration
11
History or Mars Exploration How long have humans been exploring Mars?
12
Exploring Mars Datasets What are limitations to this type of mission and its instruments? What observations can you make from this data? (Please select the relevant images and prepare to post them on your poster.) How would you interpret these observations? How would you generalize the Mars environment from these images / data? What new questions do you have about Mars? 30 minutes to look over data; 45 minutes to create a poster; gallery walk after lunch
13
LUNCH!! Please move items on the KWL chart if you feel we have learned something this morning!

History of Mars Exploration How did understanding of the Mars environment (habitability) evolve over time?
16
History of Mars Exploration What new questions do you have about Mars?
17
History of Mars Exploration What type of data do you need to answer these questions?
