2. ENGL 2020 Themes in Literature and Culture: The Grotesque Arcirnboldo, Giuseppe (1527-93). Milanese painter, designer of stained glass and tapestries. From 1562 until 1587 he served as court painter at the Habsburg imperial court in Prague. He is now remembered almost exclusively for his grotesque allegorical or symbolic figures, some of them are personifications of, e.g. The Elements or The Seasons (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches), others actual portraits, all ingeniously composed from still-life elements: e.g. The Cook, portrayed in frying pans, roast meats and sausages; Rudolph II as Vertumnus, the god of horticulture, assembled out of fruit, flowers and corn (both Stockholm, Museum).
