Both Anglo-Saxon and Norman churches can be described as Romanesque with their barrel vaults, round arches, thick piers, and small windows

The Gothic Style emerged in France in the 12 th century and was characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and buttresses. Slender clusters of columns replaced the heavy piers and larges windows filled with stained glass made these churches full of light.
