 Numbers  Numbers are expressed in different forms  Whole numbers  Non-whole numbers  Mixed numbers  Percentages

Whole numbers Whole numbers are the counting numbers and zero. Whole numbers do not contain decimals or fractions Examples: 1,2,3,10,15 Ignore zeros before whole numbers Example: 025=25

Non-whole numbers Non-whole numbers are numbers with decimals Example: 7.5, 12.25, 5.9 Mixed numbers Mixed numbers are whole numbers and a fraction Example: 12 ¼ or 45 ¾

Percentages The word percent means “by the hundred”; 100 percent = the whole or all of something

Addition Adding is the totaling of two or more whole numbers Subtraction Subtraction is the opposite of addition. Subtracting numbers means taking a number away from another number.

Multiplication Multiplication is a quick easy way to add Example: 9+9+9=27 or 3x9=27 Division Division is the opposite of multiplication

Numbers to the left of a decimal are whole numbers. Numbers to the right of a decimal are less than one Change a decimal into a percentage by the moving decimal two places to the right Examples: 0.5=% 30.0=% 0.04=%

The healthcare industry uses the metric system for measuring. The metric system is used by 90% of the world and is known as the International system of units.

1 kilogram(kg) = 1,000 grams (g) 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams (mg) 1mg = 1,000 micrograms (µg) 1liter (L) = 1,000 milliliters (mL) 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds (lbs) 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters 1 fluid ounce (oz) = 30mL or 30cc Cubic centimeters (cc) are interchangeable with mL 1ounce (in weight) = 30 grams 1 teaspoon = 5mL 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon 60 drops (gtt) = 1teaspoonful 1grain (gr) = 65mg 1 cup = 8 ounces = 240mL 1pint =473 mL = 16 fluid ounces 1 pound = 16 ounces

Abbreviations for metric terms are never plural; they are always written in singular form. Example: grams = g not gs liters =L not Ls * We always capitalize the abbreviations for liter as L so it doesn’t get confused with the number 1*

1 teaspoon = 5mL 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon 60 drops (gtt) = 1teaspoonful 1grain (gr) = 65mg 1 cup = 8 ounces = 240mL 1pint =473 mL = 16 fluid ounces 1 pound = 16 ounces

1 meter = 100 centimeters 1 meter = 1000 millimeters 10 millimeters = 1 centimeter

Celsius to Farenheit (C x 1.8) + 32 = F Farenheit to Celsius (F – 32 ) / 1.8 = C
