Advances In the years after the Civil War, advances in technology began to change the nation Three causes: –Large supply of natural resources –Explosion of inventions –Growing city populations that wanted the new products

Inventions and Discoveries Oil discoveries led to development of kerosene, used to light lamps Steam engine drilling for oil led to an oil book; gasoline developed but not popular until automobile Coal and iron production increased, which eventually led to the development of steel (Bessemer process turned iron to steel)

Inventors Thomas Alva Edison: most famous for his work with power and light Electricity changed America and soon became available in homes Christopher Sholes invented the typewriter Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone Inventions changed the American way of life
