2 Today in History  1792 – The Postal Service Act, establishing the United States Post Office Department, is signed by President George Washington  1962 – Mercury astronaut John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the earth making three orbits in 4 hours and 55 minutes February 20

8 Women’s Movement  Pre Civil War: women took care of the home and children.  By the late 19 th century, poorer women began working outside the home to provide for the family.  Begin to take on more responsibility

9 Susan B. Anthony  Great leader of the women’s rights movement.  Promoting women’s suffrage

10 Women in Industry  Better paying jobs were available in towns and cities  Many worked in manufacturing, offices, stores, and classrooms.  These jobs required a high school education  Long hours with low wages

11 Domestic Workers  Many women were servants including African Americans and immigrants.  Helping with house chores

12 Self Improvement  Many women began receiving a high school education and pursuing a college degree.  Less marriages and more social independence  Many women began to write their state legislatures to provide women with the right to vote.

13 Climbing the Social Ladder  Challenged the 14 th Amendment “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

14  National Association of Colored Women (1896): Wanted African American women’s suffrage  Challenged the 15 th Amendment “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

15 Theodore Roosevelt  Became president in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley.  Stated the people would receive a Square Deal which would lead to many progressive reforms.  Believed America required a strong president

16 Theodore Roosevelt  Wanted to get rid of the trusts to increase healthy competition among businesses  Wanted to restore fair business practices that would benefit the people.

17 Coal Miner Strike  Pennsylvania workers were upset due to the poor working conditions and went on strike  Roosevelt became a mediator to help resolve the conflict  Workers got a 10% pay increase and a nine hour work day. They could not strike for the next three years  Reintroduces the idea that the federal government should intervene when there was a threat to social welfare

18 Upton Sinclair  Wrote The Jungle to show the malpractices involved in the meatpacking industry  1906 – Roosevelt produced the Meat Inspection Act which required strict cleanliness for meat packers.

19 Pure Food and Drug Act  Companies would lie about what their products could do  Stopped the sale of contaminated food and medicines and called for truth labeling  Supported the belief that people should be given accurate information about their products.

20 Conservation  Some areas would be preserved while others would be developed for the common good.  Lumber companies were exploiting many resources without concern for the effects on the environment.  Cities dumped untreated sewage and industrial waste into rivers, poisoning the water supply

21 Civil Rights  Roosevelt failed to support civil rights for African Americans.  Met with Booker T. Washington who was the leader of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute.

22 W.E.B. Du Bois  1909: founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).  Wanted full equality for African Americans  Progressive movement did little to advance the civil rights of African Americans
