2 Activity/Bell Ringer1/28 GET NOTEBOOKS EVERY DAY… Each Table has an items that needs to be put back in the room. Each person at the table has been assigned some type of special need. Work together in your table groups to put the item back and help each other with your disabilities. ALL group members must participate!! Once you are done, return to your seats and reflect on this experiences in your notebook. (At least 3-4 sentences)

6 “Special” Definitions  Universal Design- A philosophy of designing interiors and products to accommodate ALL people with a variety of needs  Barrier-Free Design- Living spaces designed without structures that prevent access to people with special needs.  Adaptable Design- Design features that are temporary and can easily be changed

7 Children  Need a safe and healthy housing environment  Need space to grow and develop  Need a safe place outdoors to play  Communities are important What are some necessary modifications for a child?

8 Elderly  Retirement- housing needs change  Health & Lower Energy Level  Wheelchair, walker, or cane  Difficulty with stairs, slick surfaces  Goal = independence! What are some necessary modifications for the elderly?

9 Elderly  UD Modifications:  No steps at entrance or in house  Wider doorways (36” min)  Non-slip floors; contrasting colors if change  Flush thresholds  Hand rails in bathrooms and in halls  Lower countertops in bathroom and kitchen  Controls in kitchen that are on front and easy to grasp  Lever door handles  Move appliances lower

11 People with Disabilities  1988 Fair Housing Act- more freedom to choose a place to live  1990- American’s with Disabilities Act  Requires that public buildings and housing be accessible  Severe Disabilities: wheelchair, blind, deaf What are some necessary modifications for such a person?

12 People with Disabilities  UD Modifications:  Similar to modifications for elderly  Prominently mark changes in floors and countertops  Place furniture out of traffic lanes  Increased lighting  Braille on controls  Special phone or doorbell  Relocate appliances
