2 What is a Book Review? Summary of the Book
Book Reviews answer a BIG QUESTION ,given to you ,about the book. When your teacher reads the Book Review they should be able to see your responses to these: Summary of the Book The answer to the BIG QUESTION What you think of the book What you learned from the book

What message did the author want you to understand from reading this book and did they do a good job of helping you understand the message?

4 How to Write the Book Review
Book reviews have 3 different parts like an essay. Those 3 parts are: Introduction Body Conclusion

5 Introduction The introduction is important because it introduces , or brings up, the topic of your paper. You should try to have a first sentence that engages your reader. Do not begin it with ,” Hi My name is…”

6 How to start a introduction paragraph
You can open it with one of the following ways A question A meaningful quote Interesting fact Start with the title and setting of the book Start with the Author Now you need a thesis….. Examples

7 Thesis Your Thesis Statement will answer the BIG QUESTION! You will spend the whole essay answering with more detail.

8 Body Summary of the Book Detailed answer to the BIG QUESTION
In the body of your paper, you will have at 1-2 paragraphs about each of these questions: Summary of the Book Detailed answer to the BIG QUESTION What you think of the book What you learned from the book Where have we seen these questions before?

9 1. Summary- the summary should not be your whole paper
Write 2-3 paragraphs that cover the important parts of the book: What are the key parts that explain what happened in the book? Who are the characters? Where is the book set, and when is it set? What interesting things happened in the book? What was the conflict in the book? What happened to solve the conflict?

10 When you write the summary you have explained to me that you understand what happened in the book. Now you have to answer 3 more questions.

11 2. Answer the BIG QUESTION
A Book Review assignment means you read a book and wrote an essay about it. The BIG QUESTION is important. It proves that you read and understood the book.

12 3. What did you think of the book?
Was the book interesting? What was your favorite part? Why was it your favorite part? Who was your favorite in the book, and why were they your favorite? Did you like the end of the book? Would you change the ending of the book, if so how would you change it?

13 4. What did you learn? What did you learn from the book?
What did the author say to you through the characters? What was the meaning (theme) of the book? Can you relate this book to your life? What part of your life? How are you like the characters in the book? Talk about the author. Now you can write a conclusion……..

14 Conclusion The conclusion summarizes everything you read and wrote. It restates the answer to the BIG QUESTION. It restates why you think that is the answer. Then, it restates your opinion on the book.

15 Quotes Only quote the book a maximum of 5 times. Make sure you cite the page you found it on and who said it. If you write a quote make sure you explain why you used it. Use quotes to prove that a part you wrote about has evidence to back up its accuracy. You must have at least 3 quotes.

16 Grammar Make sure you use spell check. If you are not sure how to spell a word look it up. Use different types of sentences to make your paper sound scholarly. Use the punctuation checker too.
