All year groups have heightened expectations End of year 2 Punctuation- Use of capital letters, full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks. Grammar and spelling terminology- Noun, noun phrase, statement, question, exclamation, command, compound, suffix, adjective, adverb, verb, tense- past and present, apostrophe, comma

End of year 3 Punctuation- All of year 2 elements and inverted commas to punctuate direct speech Spelling and Grammar terminology- Preposition, conjunction, word family, prefix, clause, subordinate clause, direct speech, consonant, consonant letter vowel, vowel letter, inverted commas (or ‘speech marks’)

End of year 4 Punctuation- Inverted commas and other punctuation to indicate direct speech, apostrophes to mark plural possession ( the girl’s name, the girls’ name), use of commas after fronted adverbials (Before we begin, make sure you have a pencil) Spelling and Grammar terminology- Determiner, pronoun, possessive pronoun, adverbial, plural, possessive, standard English

End of year 5- Punctuation- Brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis, use of commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity. Spelling and Grammar terminology- Modal verb, relative pronoun, relative clause, parenthesis, bracket, dash, cohesion, ambiguity, converting nouns or adjectives into verbs using suffixes, verb prefixes

End of year 6- Punctuation- Semi colon, colon and dash to mark boundary between independent clauses ( It’s raining; I’m fed up),use of colon to introduce a list and semi-colons within a list, hyphens to avoid ambiguity ( man eating shark/ man-eating shark) Spelling and Grammar terminology- Subject, object, active, passive, synonym, antonym, ellipsis, hyphen, colon, semi-colon, bullet points

Spelling expectations Word lists for years 3 and 4- accidentally business disappear increase knowledge occasionally Possession Question Sentence Separate although Word lists for years 5 and 6- accommodate achieve conscience convenience exaggerate frequently guarantee Mischievous necessary parliament twelfth

Reading expectations Reading stamina- end of year 6 test expects at least 90 words a minute. Reading comprehension- inference- hidden meaning Talking about reading is key.
