Earth’s Composition 9/21/15 7-1a pgs. 166-167 IN: What do you think the inside of the Earth looks like? (You can draw a model) (Glue in the new Table of Contents) Put your Word Search on the table
2
Earth’s Layers Scientists think about Earth’s layers in two ways. –1. composition –2. physical properties
3
What is composition? The different mixtures of the elements in the different layers.
4
What are physical properties? Physical properties include temperature, density and the ability of the material to move or flow. As you go deeper inside the Earth both temperature and density increase.
5
Composition of Earth The lightest materials make up the outermost layer, and the densest materials make up the inner layers.
6
4 Layers Compositional Layers Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core
7
The Crust Crust - the outermost layer of the Earth. –It is the layer you live on!
8
The Crust There are two types of crust. –1. Continental crust –2. Oceanic crust
9
Continental Crust Everything not covered by the ocean. The continental crust is less dense than the oceanic crust.
10
Oceanic Crust Everything covered by the ocean. The oceanic crust is more dense than the continental crust. Thickness of the Crust is about 5-50 km or 3-30 miles.
11
Why do you think the oceanic crust is more dense than the continental crust?
12
The Mantle Mantle - the layer of the Earth between the crust and core.
13
The Mantle No one has ever seen what the mantle really looks like because it is too far down. The mantle does rise to the surface. –Tectonic forces –Underwater volcanoes
14
The Mantle Contains most of the Earth's mass.
15
The Core Extends from the bottom of the mantle to the center of the Earth. –Made mostly of iron. Divided into 2 parts. –Outer core –Inner core
16
Outer Core Outer Core - liquid layer of the Earth’s core. –Lies beneath the mantle.
17
Inner Core Inner Core - the solid, dense center of our planet. –Made up of iron and nickel.
18
1. Cut, color, label and glue in the diagram. OUT: Why do you think the outer core is liquid while the inner core is solid?
