2 We can classify animals into two main groups: vertebratesinvertebrates Have a backbone Do not have a backbone Vertebrates are animals with a spine or backbone 96% of all animals are invertebrates Invertebrates have an external skeleton (exoskeleton ) or no back bone at all.
