Unit 5—Part A Test Review 6 th : Chapter 1 Lessons 2-7 7 th : Chapter 1 Lessons 1-3

6 th : 1-2 What do you know about ratios? – Comparison of two quantities by division – Order matters – Be careful of wording of problem – Must simplify

6 th : 1-2 John found that 14 of the 24 students in his math class have an IPad. What is the ratio of students who do not have an IPad to students that do? Explain its meaning.

7 th : 1-1 Rate: a ratio comparing two quantities with DIFFERENT units – Written as a fraction with units on the top and bottom Unit Rate: a rate that is simplified to have a denominator of 1 – Divide top and bottom by denominator to get unit rate *Put money on top when finding unit price or better deal!

7 th : 1-1 Devin rode his bike around a pond 8 times in 58 minutes at a constant speed. How many minutes did it take him to ride around the pond one time?

7 th : 1-1 George went to Costco and bought four cases of Gatorade for $54.52. Each case contains 24 bottles of Gatorade. What is the price of one bottle of Gatorade?

7 th : 1-1 Boxes of granola bars are on sale at Jewel. The boxes are the same size but different brands. You need to purchase 12 boxes. Quaker granola bars are 3 boxes for $4.50 and Nature Valley granola bars are 4 boxes for $5.25. – Which granola bars should you purchase if you want to spend a lesser amount? – How much money will you save?

7 th : 1-2 Can also find unit rates with complex fractions – Whatever unit you need one of (comes after per) must be the denominator! – Set up the problem as a fraction with units first Then, write as normal division problem Keep, change, flip Cross-simplify if possible and multiply across – LABEL final answer and make sure it is simplified!

7 th : 1-2

7 th : 1-3 Convert Rates – Figure out if it is a single conversion or double If single, circle unit that stays the same and draw arrow from other unit If double, draw arrows to the units you are converting each to – Set up units first! – Set up units diagonal to cancel

7 th : 1-3 BW A cheetah can run 70 miles per hour. What is this speed in feet per hour? – Hint: 5280 feet = 1 mile Alonzo fills buckets at a rate of 6 gallons per hour. What is the rate in quarts per minute? – Hint: 4 quarts = 1 gallon When diving, a bald eagle can reach a speed of 50 miles per hour. What is this speed in feet per second? Round to the nearest hundredth if necessary. – Hint: 5280 feet = 1 mile & 1 hour = 3600 seconds

6 th : 1-4 What do you know about ratio tables? – Columns are filled with pairs of numbers that have the same ratio – Multiply/divide going across the rows – First column should be units

6 th : 1-4 Coco used 12 yards of fabric to make 9 blouses. Find the number of blouses she could make with 20 yards of fabric. Yards of Fabric Number of Blouses

6 th : 1-4 Cal’s Calculator Company produces scientific calculators. The company can produce 355 calculators in 5 hours. The company produces calculators 24 hours a day. After 4 whole days of work, how many calculators can the company produce? Create a ratio table and solve. If the company charges $15 per calculator, how much money will it make per day from calculator sales?

6 th : 1-5 What do you know about graphing ratio tables? – Graph the ordered pairs – Be able to describe pattern in graph by discussing relationship between units on both axes – The greater the ratio/rate, the steeper the line will appear

Ex. The table shows the distance Kaylee travels on her scooter. The table also shows this information as ordered pairs (time in seconds, distance in feet). Graph the ordered pairs. Then interpret the pattern in the graph. Distance on Scooter Time, xDistance, y(x, y) 14(1, 4) 28(2, 8) 312(3, 12) 416(4, 16)

6 th : 1-6 How can you find out if two rates or ratios are equivalent? How do you create equivalent ratios or rates?

6 th : 1-6 Determine if the ratios are equivalent. Explain your reasoning. – The ratio of boys to total students in Lisa’s class is 4:9. – Out of 27 students, there are 15 girls.

6 th : 1-6 Jennifer saved $48 in 5 weeks. In 49 days, her brother saved $64. Are the rates at which they saved equivalent? Explain your reasoning. – If Kent’s rate of saving is the same as Jennifer’s, how much will he have saved after 12 days?

6 th : 1-7 How do you solve ratio and rate problems?

6 th : 1-7 There are 57 ounces of dog biscuits in 5 boxes. At this rate, how many ounces of dog biscuits are in 8 boxes?

6 th : 1-7 At a train station, trains depart at a rate of 4 every 15 minutes. At this rate, how many trains would depart in two hours?
