As we prepare students to become GLOBAL citizens, we need to make sure that they are… Academically adept Culturally adept Linguistically adept -Dr. Eugene Garcia, VP for Education Partnerships, Arizona State University

Hi! I am an English Language Learner… I need one year just to listen and adjust (The Silent Period) It may take me FIVE to SEVEN years to read and write English, even though it SOUNDS as though I have mastered conversational English…so I am still learning! Start me out with YES or NO questions; then rephrase for me…Remember how you taught your children or learned your first language ~ NATURALLY! And ask me about my culture…Learn something about it ~ I did not come to you knowing nothing…. Thank you! An ELL Child

Two Kinds of English English Language Learners have to acquire two kinds of English in order to be successful in the school environment… 1~ Social English is the language of everyday conversations and interactions with peers, teachers, and personnel- BICS 2~ Academic English is the language used for instruction in the classroom, the language found in textbooks, and the language used in developing higher-order thinking skills- CALP

Our goal is to educate bicultural students who can function effectively in two cultures, NOT to deny or underestimate the first culture of the students.

Schools must see and respect cultural differences, but they must “teach” expected behaviors….

REMEMBER: ~We are educating students to compete in a GLOBAL economy ~The best way to teach to all kids to value diversity is to MODEL respect by all school personnel ~Working effectively with other cultures is something you learn to do. All school Personnel must receive staff development to help them improve their skills as individuals and professionals (OCR 1964, 1974, 1981; IDEA 1997; BEC 2001)

OUR STUDENTS ’08-09 Liberia (French) Russia (Russian) Vietnam (Vietnamese) Bosnia (Bosnian, German) India (Hindi) Korea (Korean) Sri Lanka (Sinhalese) Pakistan (Urdu, Punjabi) Egypt (Arabic) Mexico and Venezuela (Spanish) Philippines (Filipino) Morocco (Arabic) Myanmar (Burmese)

Finally….. …when a new student and his/her family registers, the school secretary notifies the ESL teacher for screening purposes. We have access to many forms, such as Free Lunch, permission slips for Field Trips, vision screening results, etc. in nearly….. 22 LANGUAGES!!!
