Methodology European particle physics communication network At a special session in Lisbon on 14 July 2006, the CERN Council unanimously approved a European Strategy for Particle Physics. Communication is integral to this strategy, which states: "Council will establish a network of closely cooperating professional communication officers from each Member State, which would incorporate existing activities, propose, implement and monitor a European particle physics communication and education strategy, and report on a regular basis to Council."

5 April Open Day Purpose 1.Communicating the importance of the LHC for society and its main scientific challenges primarily to the local (CH and F) communities and the member states mainly through the international media 2.Strengthen CERN public image and awareness at a local and international level 3.Create feeling of “suspense” close to big event (start up): last opportunity to visit

LHC Open Day messages Main scientific challenges of the LHC: advancing knowledge of the fundamental laws of nature, understanding the mystery of mass, gravity and contributing to today’s main astrophysical mysteries (dark matter and energy, new particles, extra dimensions of the universe) Explain the impact the LHC will have : - in the local community (What will go on underground in their area) - in the international community (What are the outcomes of the LHC start-up and running) - in our daily life (What the LHC can do for all us? Technological applications) - anticipate fears/myths and reassure about safety issues (radiation, cooling plants emissions, noise)

Scope of OD project team Establish a visits and activity programme on: - Cern main site (CH) - extended - The LHC tunnel and experiments on F territory - Prevessin site extended -Coordinate the programme through a network of working packages per activity and manage the organization of the activities with the WP leaders and a standing task force -Fundraising to support programme -Communicating the programme to target audiences -Create partnerships with the local communities for the organization

LHC Open day 08 concept Distributed visits around the LHC ring, instead of central access point with transport to the LHC areas, through equally attractive parallel programmes No “across the border transport” (except as back up) Attract and orient local residents to closest point Enlarged Swiss site with internal transport (TPG): Meyrin site, P1, Atlas Cavern, Globe + UA1 (+ back up transport to F) Prevessin (lab 2 with CCC, P18, neutrino, UA2) 10 French sites around ring: P. 2, Alice cavern, P. 3 (?), P4 (cavity and synchrotron light), P. 5, CMS cavern, P 6, P7 (?), P8 and LHC-b cavern

MEYRIN site ( all LHC related activities, lectures, films) extended to: -GLOBE: LHC big photo exhibition, garden hands on, films, live webcast LHC world - ATLAS cavern - LHC tunnel P. 1 - UA1: Historical place: Accelerating Nobels Photo Exhibition, UA1 central barrel, Nobel event, G-2 magnet targeted to public from GE, communes around Meyrin, (Satigny, Vernier, Grand Saconnex … ) and internationals 2. What can EPPOG do? Sat 5 April: take part in live webcast with institutes and (some) industrialists who took part in the LHC enterprise - gathered in one or two venues per country Tue 21 October: contribute one top musician per country to distributed concert Suggestions welcome!
