Student Blogging in an Online Math Course Jodi Cotten SUNY Westchester Community College AMATYC Distance Learning Committee

How this idea started… Online journal. Journals were private. I learned a lot about my students and learning mathematics from reading these journals. I wanted my students to learn this from each other.

First idea… Online website: www.blogger.comwww.blogger.com

Blogger.com Good: *Easy to set up and use. *It’s the ‘in’ thing to do. Bad: *Another website to log in and check for the student and instructor. *Technical issues.

Back to the journal… Back to WebCT Opened up the journals to the entire class Added detail to the journal requirements.

The Journal Details… Your journal will include: Week 1: Your personal math biography. Weeks 2 – 13: Journal entries from the list of topics given below. Week 14: Reflection on “The Proof”. Week 15: Last entry: Reflection on the course.

Journal Examples MATH 120 and MATH 120H
