HF FE Radiation tests at the CHARM facility Tullio Grassi 4 June 2015 Documentation on: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/CMS/HF_FE_2015irradAtCHARM

Goals Irradiation test of a HF FE crate with one ngCCM and one or more RM Connections and operations similar to the final system Radiation field similar to operation environment; we asked for: – Dose: 100 Gy – 1-MeV neutron equivalent fluence : 5 x E12 / cm2 – High Energy Hadron fluence : 2 x E10 /cm2 Monitor the behavior during irradiation 2

Plans First irradiation run: June 15th to 19 th ; use one pre-prod RM and one pre-prod ngCCM. Second irradiation run: ~ Oct 2015; use a few production RMs and one ngCCM (pre-prod or prod ?) 3

Arrangement will be similar to Point 5 4 CHARM irradiation area CHARM technical room CHARM pre- installed cables, 30-meter Power supply with I, V logging

Irradiation area 5 Cable chain (carries the cables) Rail for cart (carries the Unit- Under-Test) Cables and Unit-Under-Test are moved to their final position simultaneously.

patch-panel of irrad area 6 We must use the installed cables and connect via existing patch panels (we must adapt to that). UUT (HF FE) Patch panel in irrad area Patch panel in tech room computer Our custom cables CHARM cables Our custom cables HF BE

Garages for multiple chains Loading our cables into a chain is not trivial. Normally one full day is allocated for this operation. After doing that we can leave the cables, in a chain and park it in a garage, for future irradiations. 7

CHARM installed cables end up in the “Technical room” 8

Dry Run Area: has clones of patch-panels 9 = clone of tech room = clone of irrad area Already available to us

CHARM Monitoring & Dosimetry Online measurement of: TID 1-MeV neutron equivalent fluence HEH and thermal neutron fluence A dedicated monitoring tool will allow to: visualize the radiation levels in real time archiving of levels for different runs 10

Schedule for June run As soon as we are ready: begin of dry run 11 June: end of dry-run 12 June : installation of cables into the chain 15 June : start of irradiation 20 June : end of irradiation 11

Manpower We are short on manpower. Sasha no more available after June 11. Josh K. no more available after June 14. Stephen will arrive June 10. Not much volunteering so far. 12

Task list Crate with backplane: take one from bld 904 Turkish QIE-card: at least one available at CERN Pre-prod ngCCM: being prepared at U.VA Optical fibers: arrived, not tested (Tullio) Power cables and connectors: in progress (Sasha) ngCCM “remote jumpers over copper links”: status ? (Stephen +) TMR on QIE-card FPGAs: done, partly tested (Tullio) TMR on ngCCM FPGAs : done on baseboard; mezzanine ? (Stephen) Power Supply: rented from pool (Sasha) Real-time monitor of current, voltage: GPIB SW done (Sasha, Josh) Computer with SLC6: waiting for CERN IP address (Sasha) Move computer to dry run room  new IP address request HCAL DAQ installation: waiting for computer (who ?) ngccm client and server installation: waiting for computer (Alan) Scripts for monitoring: will start from existing scripts (Tote ?) Move computer to technical room  new IP address request Oscilloscope with proper wiring: not started (who ?) 13

The End 14
