Notes Quiz 2 Semester 2

1) Archaic 2) Classical 3) Hellenistic 3 Periods of Greek art

The Archaic period (750 – 500BC) brought statues sculpted with very stiff posture, and always having a thin smile. It did not introduce much variation or individuality.

Smiles vanished from sculptures during the Classical period (500 – 336 BC,) after several wars in Greece. The posture of the sculptures is much more natural, with a curve in the body and often times a weight-bearing foot (contrapposto.) Human figures were sculpted to be more aesthetically pleasing.

The Hellenistic period (336 – 146 BC) changed Greek art because it focuses on reality instead of the ideas of beauty and perfection. It opened realms such as old age, ugliness, and suffering. This often involves very dramatic poses in the sculptures. Ideas shifted from being totally revolved around the gods to real human behavior
