5. THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE Charles Babbage was born in December of 1791 and died in October of 1871. He invented a machine he called a difference engine which was the first computer. He had nine children. The machine was never completed because the parts were too hard to make. He died in poverty and no one knew how valuable his invention would be.
