Ex-SEAL says he fired final bin Laden shot
2
Former Navy SEAL Robert O'Neill confirmed in a recent November interview with The Washington Post that he was the one who fired the final shot to kill Osama bin Laden in 2011. The 38-year-old Montanan also said that other SEAL team members were involved in the raid, including Mark Bissonnette, who detailed the group's experiences in his memoir, “No Easy Day.” He said it was clear that Bin Laden had been killed and not merely injured from his shot when he fell to the floor with a split skull. Before he was shot, bin Laden "had his hands on a woman's shoulders pushing her ahead," O'Neill recounts, likely to deflect the attack. others in the military community have wondered whether he can claim to kill bin Laden since there were at least two others in the room who fired weapons. He said he was hesitant to attach his name to the account until his identity was linked to the story on a military blog earlier this week without his consent. O'Neill also said his secret was known by members of Congress and some news organizations. O'Neill's move to go public is a controversial one, as it violates an unspoken military rule: Don't seek attention for your service. "We do not abide willful or selfish disregard for our core values in return for public notoriety or financial gain," said an Oct. 31 letter to the Naval Special Warfare ranks from commanding officer B.L. Losey and force master sergeant M.L. Margaraci.

In Other News A New Zealand police charge of "attempting to procure murder" against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been dropped. Rudd, the 60-year-old drummer for the legendary hard rock band, had been accused of trying to have two men killed. But the New Zealand court system decided there wasn't enough evidence to justify it. Rudd still faces other charges, including threatening to kill. A federal appeals court allowed four states to prohibit same-sex unions -- a decision that could force the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue. In a 2-1 ruling Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed lower court rulings in Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky that struck down same-sex marriage bans. "Star Wars 7" has a title: "The Force Awakens.” The latest chapter in the sprawling saga concluded principal photography recently, and with that finish came a tweet, posted Thursday morning, with the (presumably official) title. The new film is due for release December 18, 2015. Every film except "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" has been the No. 1 film of the year at the box office.
