Northern Strategy Lincoln and General Winfield S. Scott agree to blockade the south. Also wanted to take control of the Mississippi River. Strategy called the Anaconda Plan.

First Battle of Manassas (The Battle of Bull Run) The First major battle of the Civil War Civilians gathered for picnics to watch the battle as if it were a basketball game. The Confederacy (South) destroyed the Union ( North) at this battle, due to the great leadership of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. It proved to both sides that the war would be long and difficult.

The Battle of Antietam Robert E. Lee began to invade the Union. Union General George McClellan attacked Lee’s troops in Maryland. The battle that followed was the bloodiest day of the Civil War. 25,000 killed or wounded. Neither side won, but Lee retreats to Virginia.

The Emancipation Proclamation Issued by Abraham Lincoln. Stated that all slaves still in rebellion against the federal government would be legally free. Never actually freed any slaves.

The Battle of Gettysburg This was fought over July 4 th weekend in 1863. On the last day of the battle Confederate George Pickett leads “Picket’s Charge”, which was one last attempt by the South to win the battle. The Union defeated the Confederacy. General Robert E. Lee lost a third of his army at Gettysburg. This was the turning point in the Civil War. After the battle Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, which became one of his most famous speeches.

The Battle of Vicksburg The Union army led by General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Vicksburg for six weeks. The Confederates were so desperate for food they were eating horses and mules. On July 4, 1863 the Confederates surrendered Vicksburg to the Union. This gave the Union total control of the Mississippi River

Sherman’s March to the Sea General Grant ordered “total war”, which meant the destruction fields, factories and railroads. Sherman ordered to Atlanta to be evacuated and burned to the ground. He then marched to Savannah, GA destroying everything in his path.

Lee Surrenders at the Appomattox Courthouse Richmond finally fell to Union troops. While retreating, Lee is surrounded by Union troops. General Lee and General Grant meet in a small farmhouse, where Lee surrenders.

Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated President Lincoln visits Ford’s Theater. John Wilkes Booth sneaks up behind president Lincoln and shoots him in the head. Lincoln dies the next morning.
