Formal Writing Introduction: – Hook, Essential Background, Thesis (Directly answers big question!) Body: – Topic Sentence (Avoid Quotes!) that overviews the paragraph’s focus/supports thesis – Direct Quotes INTEGRATED!!!!! NO air-dropped!!! Rose remembers her tumultuous childhood : “…” (12). All quotes directly/indirectly support the topic sentence – Follow-up analysis explaining how quote aligns with topic sentence/thesis statement – TRANSITION into next paragraph

Formal Writing continued… Conclusion: – Restates thesis in an enlightened way – Restates author’s full name/title of essay (if appropriate) – Recaps main points from EACH body paragraph – Ends on the “so what” note- What is the larger implication???
