Material Resources

Copper Refining Malachite is an industrial copper ore Copper ore is crushed and treated with sulfuric acid. The resulting solution has large amounts of copper sulfate. The copper sulfate is treated with iron to precipitate the copper. ▫What is precipitate? ▫Why does iron cause the copper to precipitate?
4
The Lab in a Nutshell Solid copper ore reacts with sulfuric acid to produce dissolved copper sulfate, dissolved copper hydroxide and carbon dioxide gas. ▫Bubbles of CO 2 form Solid iron reacts with dissolved copper sulfate to produce solid copper and dissolved iron sulfate ▫This is a displacement reaction ▫This occurs because iron is more reactive than copper

Read pp.291-293 in Science and Sustainability Make a timeline of material development. Include the temperatures that are necessary to produce each material on the timeline.
6
Timeline of Materials Development Note that over time the required temperatures increased. Energy is extremely significant in the history of our use and understanding of Earth’s resources.
7
By-Products of Materials Production Heavy metals cause contamination whenever they are disposed of incorrectly. The problem can be dealt with by pre-treating the waste to prevent metals from leaching out. ▫Solidification: make the waste solid ▫Fixation: immobilization of the toxic substance ▫Phytoremediation: using plants to remove toxic substances http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IabslL-SgqY
