5
Active vs. Passive Transport
6
Passive: NO ENERGY REQUIRED Diffusion Facilitated Diffusion Osmosis
7
Particles (which are constantly moving) move from areas of high concentration to low concentration. Diffusion does NOT require energy.
8
Charged and large particles can be carried through protein channels. Fast and specific Move from high to low
9
Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane. When the particles are too big to fit through the membrane, water moves from high to low.
10
Sometimes, cells must move materials from low to high – against a concentration gradient. Active transport requires energy (ATP).
11
How big bulk materials get transported Endocytosis – materials taken in by cell membrane pockets Exocytosis – materials leaving the cell in membrane pockets
12
What did you learn about cell membranes? What is the difference between active vs. passive transport? What would happen if there was no transport systems?
