GIS Software for Hydrological Applications Tim Merrill Nushrat Nazia Erin Dougherty Jeff Bishop
2
An introduction to the key issues We’re GIS analysts from Old City, TX Upgrading our sewer system Combined sewers and their potential problems Other major sewer issues Our Situation
3
Criteria we used to judge the software Modeling of dry and wet weather conditions Real-time data collection and visualization Secure data management and easy access from remote locations (web based or stand-alone) Training, Support, and User Interface Price Is it easily upgrade-able?
4
H2OMap Sewer Pro Developed by MWH Soft Stand-Alone Database Driven Modeling Tool Compatibility Models both wet- and dry-weather conditions Infiltration losses Hydrogen Sulfide/Corrosion Predictor
5
H2OMap Sewer Pro Real Time Monitoring Support available 24 hours a day Flat yearly fee for unlimited online training Pricing dependent upon system size Can upgrade to H2O Map Sewer Suite Pro for discounted price
7
H2OMap Sewer Pro Who else is using H2O Map Sewer? Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (FL) Guam Water Works Authority Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AK) Region of Peel
8
SewerCAD 5.0 Developed by Haestad Methods Design and analysis tool Develop and compute loads Simulate hydraulic response of system Addresses newer sewer regulations, including: -hydrographic loading -extended-period simulations -enhanced profiling views -animation
9
SewerCAD 5.0 Can model dry- and wet-weather conditions Extended Period Simulation provides a continuous time-based model Stand alone or AutoCAD interface Animate results in any view of the model. Especially useful for identifying trouble spots within the system, and evaluating the temporal effects of critical events.
10
SewerCAD 5.0 Who Uses It? Bangalore, India’s 5 th largest city’s Water Supply and Sewage selected SewerCAD to analyze and design improvements to the city's sewer system. Population 5 Million. City of Wichita Falls, USA - use SewerCAD to improve and manage its sanitary sewer systems. Brisbane Water (Australia) supplies water and wastewater services to about 875,000 people uses SewerCAD to model their sanitary sewer systems. TWAD Board, India - The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board utilize SewerCAD for the design and restoration of this state’s sanitary sewer infrastructure.
11
InfoWorks CS Developed by Wallingford Software Can model wet and dry weather conditions Can link to Oracle databases, MS Access, SQL server, and MapInfo professional and ESRI shapefiles Dynamic Analysis Real-time control Can simulate models up to 100,000 nodes
12
InfoWorks CS Water quality assessments and sediment transport modeling Secures data management with user login to control access Training offices in Fort Worth, TX Support and training websites appear easy to navigate and contain contact information (granted, it’s for England) Cost is expensive. Massachusetts Water Resource Authority deemed it cost-effective.
13
InfoWorks CS Who Uses It? Jamaica in October 2005 used InfoWorks to develop a hydraulic model to locate solutions to a main water line that was damaged by Hurricane Dennis. Shanghai, China in June 2005 used InfoWorks CS to evaluate a major sewer line with inadequate capacity. Massachusetts Water Resources Authority implemented InfoWorks CS in January 2005 to continue the process of improving system efficiency and preventing CSOs.

Recommendation We recommend that Old City, TX implements InfoWorks CS. -Success with Massachusetts Water Resource Authority under similar circumstances -Local training offices in Fort Worth, TX -Can handle very large system (up to 100,000 nodes) to allow for future growth -Easy data integration and secure management
