Algebra – Linear Functions By the end of this lesson you will be able to identify and calculate the following: 1. The gradient–intercept method

In the beginning of this unit it was shown how the graph of a straight line, whose rule is given, could be obtained by plotting a number of points and joining them together. In fact, only two points are needed to obtain any straight-line graph. In this section we will discuss two methods of sketching linear graphs whose rules are given.

These methods are: 1. the gradient–intercept method and 2. the x- and y-intercept method. Each of these methods also uses two points.

We will now discuss three special cases of the linear rule; where the y-intercept, c, = 0, where the gradient, m, = 0 where the gradient is undefined.
