Serving The Military Family World Class Military-Dependent Students: Marching Forward on Two Fronts in PWCS Prince William County Schools received a DoDEA Grant that will provide military-dependent students social/emotional and academic support. Students will receive assistance from tutors, STEM coaches, and counselors in a hands-on direct services approach.

3. Increase the percentage of eligible military-dependent students receiving academic support and enrichment. Increase the proportion of military- dependent students in each school who participate in social/emotional support activities and school connectedness events. Goals of Our Grant

5. Strategies to Accomplish Goals “Schools play a critical role in disarming the negative effects of mobility on students. Therefore, school staff should be doing more to support these high-risk students” (Gruman et al., 2008).

6. The Patriotic Leadership Ambassadors program will be developed by PWCS professional educators and will provide academic as well as social/emotional support for students. Military-dependent students participating in STEM related after school programs will be provided the resources to compete in regional and world tournaments. This grant ensures that no military-dependent student at participating schools will be placed on a waiting list to participate in any STEM related after school programs, such as VEX IQ. 7. Strategies Continued Military dependent student support programs will provide the opportunity for military support coaches and students to participate in a 2-day training during the summer focused on social-emotional adjustments, academic success, establishing relationships, community service and leadership development. This training enables students to lead any transitioning student through a school move and the related adjustments to new and uncertain surroundings. These student support programs will be further enhanced by middle and high school students attending Student Success Academy – A week long summer enrichment program that focuses on the development of study skills for students.

8. Using Gizmos as an integrated piece of the curricula allows for more meaningful mathematics, technology, and science integration, critical skills all our student will need prior to graduation. Gizmos professional development for educators will offer teachers and students a way to more easily visualize & study phenomena and concepts that many times prove abstract enough so as to cause confusion and stifle mastery of material.
