THE PERSIAN EMPIRE  The Persians started as a small tribe in present-day Iran and built a large empire by conquering neighbors  They won many battles through volleys of arrows and close combat with spears and lances  At its peak, the Persian empire was the largest empire the world had ever seen and had conquered Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Syria, Egypt, and parts of Egypt and Europe

5. KING DARIUS  Darius, one of the greatest kings of the Persian Empire divided the kingdom into 20 provinces known as satrapies  He established a tax collection system and appointed officials to rule local areas  He also allowed the people he conquered to keep their own customs and religions

6. THE IONIAN REVOLT  In 546 B.C.E., the Persians had conquered the Greek city-state of Ionia  The Persians took the Ionians’ farmland and harbors as well as forced them to pay taxes and serve in the Persian army  In 493 B.C.E., the Ionians asked Athens for help and while the Ionians were able to win with their help, they left shortly after and 3 years later, the Persians defeated the Ionians and destroyed the capital city, Miletus

8. DARIUS AND HIS MESSENGERS  After the events of the Ionian revolt, King Darius decided to conquer all of the city-states of Greece  He sent Persian messengers to bring back presents of Greek earth and water, but the Greeks refused to the point of throwing messengers into pits and wells  “Earth and water, you’ll find plenty of both down there”

9. THE BATTLE OF MARATHON  Darius was furious and in 490 B.C.E., he sent a massive army of soldiers and cavalry by boat to Greece and they landed on the plain of Marathon  Miltiades, an Athenian general, convinced the Greek generals from the other city-states to help their ally  Athens sent a runner named Pheidippides to Sparta and he ran for 26.2 miles over 2 days and nights, but was forced to remain until the next full moon due to the Spartan festival occurring

10. THE BATTLE OF MARATHON  The Athenians had to face the Persians alone and Miltiades had his men stretch across the plain in a narrow line  When the Persian army finally decided to attack, Miltiades had the left and right ends of his army flank the Persians and overwhelm them  The Greeks and Miltiades achieved a major upset and stunned the Persians, but the war had only just begun
