Lesson 7-3 Pages 340-344 Inequalities PA Lesson Check 7-2

What you will learn! 1. How to write inequalities. 2. How to graph inequalities.

Inequality

What you really need to know! A mathematical sentence that contains any of the following symbols is called an inequality.

<>≤≥ is less than is fewer than is greater than is more than exceeds is less than or equal to is no more than is at most is greater than or equal to is no less than is at least

Link to Pre-Made Lesson

Example 1: Write an inequality for the sentence. Your age is less than 19 years. Pick a variable to represent your age. Let’s use a. a < 19

Example 1b: Write an inequality for the sentence. Your height is greater than 52 inches. Pick a variable to represent your height. Let’s use h. h > 52

Example 2: Write an inequality for the sentence. Your speed is less than or equal to 62. Pick a variable to represent your speed. Let’s use s. s ≤ 62

Example 2b: Write an inequality for the sentence. Your speed is greater than or equal to 42. Pick a variable to represent your speed. Let’s use s. s ≥ 42

Example 3: To meet a certain air quality standard, an automobile must have a fuel efficiency of not less than 27.5 miles per gallon. Write an inequality to describe this situation. Let e represent efficiency e ≥ 27.5

Example 4: For the given value, state whether the inequality is true or false. 6 – 9 < 4 -3 < 4 True! s – 9 < 4, s = 6

Example 4b: For the given value, state whether the inequality is true or false.

False!

Example 5: Graph the inequality: x > 10 1112131478910 4 5615161718

Example 5b: Graph the inequality: x ≥ 10 1112131478910 4 5615161718

Example 5c: Graph the inequality: x < 10 1112131478910 4 5615161718

Example 5d: Graph the inequality: x ≤ 10 1112131478910 4 5615161718

Example 6: Write the inequality for the graph. -40 -39-38 -37 -36-35-34-33 x ≥ -38
