Unit Seven – Basic Layout 2 Review Two modes for the Display Area Toggle back and forth with a click It’s easy to tell which mode you are in: Layout looks like a page! There are two modes for the Display Area: 1. Data Display 2. Layout Display Display/Layout View Selector

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 3 Display Area: Layout View Orientation ► By default, Layout View shows data in a graphic frame extending to the margins of the “page”. ► Click and drag to resize like any graphic. ► Corners to keep proportions ► Edges to distort ► Refresh button repaints the screen for changes in data properties.

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 4 Display Area: Layout View Orientation ► The extents of the Data Frame may not be the same in the Layout View and the Data View. ► But be clear: These are both live Data Frames of the same data. They are just of different sizes. ► The Tools Tool Bar will behave essentially the same in either view… panning data through the frame.

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 5 Sizing & Scaling Data Tool Bar(s) ► The Tools Tool Bar Functions against data in the Layout Data Frame, Zooms and pans the data not the “page” ► There is a separate Tool Bar for Layouts: Has all the same zoom & pan type tools BUT: Zooms and pans the “page” that contains the Data Frame

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 6 Adding Map Elements Inserting Map Elements to Add Information ► Insert map elements from the I NSERT M ENU ► In this unit, we will be adding only Title, North Arrow, and Scale Bar

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 7 Adding Map Elements Title 1. Select I NSERT M ENU and T ITLE 2. Enter text in the default text box that appears in the Data Frame and hit ‘Enter’ Title turns to a dotted text box 3. Position the title 4. Change properties Alter text here if needed 5. Repeat, if needed!

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 8 Adding Map Elements North Arrow 1.Select I NSERT M ENU and N ORTH A RROW 2.Select an arrow style, and set color or other properties and close the dialog 3.Position and re-size. The north arrow has handles and may be resized with click & drag and positioned like any other graphic Angle adjustable!

Unit Seven – Basic Layout 9 Adding Map Elements Scale Bar 1. Select I NSERT M ENU and S CALE B AR 2. Select a style. 3. Use the properties button. There are several properties that should be reviewed The Scale Bar has to remain in consistent scale with the map being displayed! With the settings shown, the scale bar will go from 4 to 3 miles automatically when resized. (click & drag)
