Compressor is………. Compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. Compression of a gas naturally increases its temperature. Compressors are closely related to pumps: both increase the pressure on a fluid and both can transport the fluid through a pipe. As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas. Liquids are generally incompressible, so the main result of a pump is to move the liquid elsewhere. Positive Displacement Compressors
In positive displacement compressor, successive volumes of air areconfined within a closed space and pressure is increased by reducing volume of space. Two types of positive displacement compressors: 1.Reciprocating 2.Rotary Sub: FPE Topic: 2-Stage Reciprocating Compressor

Types of Compressors Rotary Compressor Rotors instead of pistons: continuous discharge Benefits: low cost, compact, low weight, easy to maintain Sizes between 30 – 200 hp Types Lobe compressor Screw compressor Rotary vane / Slide vane Rotary compressors have rotors in place of pistons and give a continuous pulsation free discharge. They operate at high speed and generally provide higher throughput than reciprocating compressors. Their capital costs are low, they are compact in size, have low weight, and are easy to maintain. For this reason they have gained popularity with industry. They are most commonly used in sizes from about 30 to 200 hp or 22 to 150 kW. Types of rotary compressors include: Lobe compressor, Screw compressor, Rotary vane / sliding-vane. The picture shows a screw compressor Rotary screw compressors may be air or water-cooled. Since the cooling takes place right inside the compressor, the working parts never experience extreme operating temperatures. The rotary compressor, therefore, is a continuous duty, air cooled or water cooled compressor package. Sub: FPE Topic: 2-Stage Reciprocating Compressor

Rotary Screw Compressor
Use two meshed rotating positive-displacement helical screws to force the gas into a smaller space. These are usually for continuous operation in commercial and industrial applications and may be either stationary or portable. Their application can be from 5 hp (3.7 kW) to over 500 hp (375 kW) and from low pressure to very high pressure (>1200 psi or 8.3 MPa). They are commonly seen with roadside repair crews powering air-tools. Sub: FPE Topic: 2-Stage Reciprocating Compressor
