1
Acids, Bases, and pH
2
Acids Produces H + in water forming H 3 O + ions (hydronium) Corrosive Sour Feels squeaky Conduct electricity: stronger the acid the more current Ex. Battery acid, oranges, coke, vinegar
3
Bases Produces OH - (hydroxide) ions in water Corrosive Bitter, chalky Slippery Conducts electricity; stronger the base the stronger the current Ex. Milk, soap, cleaners, baking soda, bleach
4
Indicators Indicates an acid or base EX. pH paper, litmus paper, or red cabbage juice Acids turn blue litmus paper red Bases turn red litmus paper blue
5
pH Scale pH scale measures H 3 O + ions from 0-14 0 = strong acid 6 = weak acid 7 = neutral 8 = weak base 14 = strong base
6
Acid Rain Plants and animals need water close to neutral = 7 Pollution causes acid rain (>5.6) More damage done to Roman ruins & pyramids in last century than in the last 2000 years
