2 22.4 Asexual Reproduction TEKS 10B KEY CONCEPT Plants can produce genetic clones of themselves through asexual reproduction.

3 22.4 Asexual Reproduction TEKS 10B Plants can reproduce asexually with stems, leaves, or roots. Asexual reproduction allows a plant to make copies of itself. Regeneration is one type of asexual reproduction. –plants grow a new individual from fragment of parent –occurs when piece of a stem, leaf, or root falls off parent plant

4 22.4 Asexual Reproduction TEKS 10B –stems, leaves, or roots attached to parent plant produce new individuals –specific adaptations include stolons, rhizomes, and tubers Vegetative reproduction is another type of asexual reproduction.

5 22.4 Asexual Reproduction TEKS 10B Vegetative Reproduction: asexual reproduction in which stems, leaves, or roots attached to the parent plant produce new individuals Stolons: stems that grow horizontally along the ground that produce roots and leaves at certain points (strawberries) Rhizomes: stems that grow horizontally underground that produce new plants/buds at certain points (irises) Tubers: underground stem modified for storage that can produce new plants from buds (Potatoes) Bulbs: underground stem surrounded by modified leaves adapted for storage that can divide to produce new plants (tulips)

6 22.4 Asexual Reproduction TEKS 10B Humans can produce plants with desirable traits using vegetative structures. Vegetative propagation takes advantage of plants’ ability to reproduce asexually. Humans use one plant with desirable traits to produce many individuals. – grafting joins the parts of two plants together to form a hybrid plant with desirable traits (frost tolerance, disease resistance, etc. –cutting a fragment cut from a leaf or stem may be put in soil or water to form a new individual (African violets)
