3.8 A Memo Jan 25, 2016

In your journals:  What is the role of an older sibling in your house? If you are an only child, what would you wish for in an older brother or sister?  Pre-AP: You need your Springboards

#3 Complex Sentence 1/25/2016 Defn: A complex sentence has an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Write one example: 1.Although my friend seems normal, she is not! 2.I will change my mind when you show proof. 3.If you see an accident, stop and give assistance. Indicates subordinate clause. Write your example using the sentence variation

Reminder  Vocab pg. 97 due tomorrow.  Vocab Test Units 7 & 8 this Thursday, Jan 28.

Learning Target  Today we will: understand the importance of pov in creating text  So we can: create a memo with subordinate clauses and appositives from the principal’s pov.  I will know I have it when I can: Use subordinate clauses and pov effectively in the memo

HOT Questions 1.How can predictions aid in understanding foreshadowing? 2.How can we identify hints or clues? 3.Do authors have patterns of language (diction?) that aid in predictions? 4.How can we incorporate foreshadowing into our own writing? 5.Why do humans feel the need to predict? 6.What are some non-literary examples of foreshadowing?

Chunk 1 August 18-23, pages 7- 33  Skim these pages alone or with your family.  Create a level I (literal), level II (interpretive), and level III (universal) question for these pages. One of each.  Put them on the left hand side of your double-entry journal and answer them on the right hand side. Level of QuestionQuestion (left side of journal) Answer (right side of journal) Level I-literalWhat is the Erik Fisher Football Dream? Level II- interpretiveHow does the “dream” influence the interactions of the family? Why does the zombie reappear in the entry for August 18 th ? Level IIIWhat happens when people bury the truth?

Close Reading Handout  Read the handout out loud or silently with your family.  Reread the handout with your highlighter.  Look for the pattern words.  Why did the author choose these words?  Why do you think the author might connect this memory to Erik?  Could this be foreshadowing? (What is foreshadowing?)

3.4 Double Entry Journal Date Quotes from or questions related to the novel Tangerine 1.Can human beings choose not to remember? When and why might a person make a choice to forget? 2.What is the relationship btw forgiving and forgetting? Explain. 3.Think of an example from your own life of someone who chose not to remember… Title of Entry Personal Responses: Answers to the questions, reflections, connections to the text, and so on. 1.It is interesting that Paul can “see things that Mom or Dad can’t,” but he can’t remember how he came to wear the glasses the summer of the eclipse. Humans can choose not to remember because the truth is too painful. When their mind is ready to accept, then they will start to recall the painful events and…

Double Journal Entry  Who are the characters and their relationships?  Why is the first day of kindergarten significant?  What happens in the plot?  What could Erik’s actions indicate?  What is the setting?  What is the flashback? What purpose does it serve?  From what point of view is the novel written?  Erik makes up the story about the eclipse. He also leaves Paul alone on his first day of school ever-and makes fun of him. What is the job of a big brother?  The point of view is first person. This means that we get Paul’s version of events, his side of things, his perspective, and we learn and remember things as Paul learns and remembers.

Reading Through Different Lenses As if we are looking THROUGH A MIRROR We look for a reflection of ourselves and our experiences. We make personal connections to the text. This deepens our understanding and enjoyment because we feel connected. As if we are looking UNDER A MICROSCOPE We examine the construction of the text – the structure and elements that the author used to make it good or effective. By understanding why the author constructed the piece the way he/she did, we gain better understanding and enjoyment. As if we are looking THROUGH A TELESCOPE We seek new information and explore unknown topics. When we focus on the new information that we ’ re learning, we understand and enjoy the text more.

Springboard 3.8 pg 184  After rereading the entries from August 21, you are going to pretend that you are Mrs. Gates, the principal of Lake Windsor Middle School.  Tangerine pgs. 24-27.  Consider how a principal should sound.  Then consider how Mrs. Gates sounds.

In the Memo (look at Aug. 21)  You are writing to the head counselor at Lake Windsor Middle School summarizing your meeting with Paul and his mother. Be sure to use text evidence from the novel.  On a word document, create a memo that will be put in Paul’s file.  What are your perceptions of Paul and his mother?  Do you think Paul will be successful? Why or why not? Be sure to include text evidence.

Revise with Subordinate Clauses  A Subordinate clause is a group of words that has a subject and verb, but can’t stand alone because it does not contain a complete thought.  Although Paul does have a visual impairment, he seems reluctant to use IEP accommodations. (adv)  When faced with the reality of his disability, Paul becomes belligerent. (adv)  Note: a list of common subordinating conjunctions is on 184. They are a good way to start the subordinate clause.  You must have three subordinating clauses in your memo.  Submit to Net school under “Memo.” Look on page 184 for more examples.
