She was one tough lady! “She was disowned by the Quakers. She lost one husband to an explosion at a munitions depot that he was guarding. Her second husband died in a British prison. She survived her third husband, who was sick for many years. She had seven daughters, two of whom died in infancy. She maintained a business through it all.” http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/

Wow! So why is she important to the American Revolution? Yeah. Like why should we care about some lady who lived like a billion years ago?

Well, first of all she was born in 1752. She is important to our nation because, according to her, she sewed the first American flag. In a time of turmoil and tragedy she created an emblem that would represent our nation as separate from Great Britain. Betsy died on January 30, 1836, at the age of 84.She has been buried in three different locations: Free Quaker burial ground at South 5th St. near Locust, Mt. Moriah Cemetery, and now on Arch Street in the courtyard adjacent to the Betsy Ross House.
